The CAPM® is a knowledge-based exam, where the questions reflect the terminology and understanding of basic project management theory, processes and deliverables. The exams themselves are very different in content as well as in difficulty.The PMP® indicates this individual has both the knowledge and experience to tackle larger, more complicated project efforts. The CAPM® certification shows prospective employers that this individual understands project management and can handle small to medium projects, or work along-side a more experienced project manager to gain the additional experience needed for larger project efforts.The PMP® includes concepts from additional management disciplines, like Strategic Alignment, Human Resources, Quality, Risk, Continuous Improvement and Cost/Budget management. The CAPM® exam only covers the information contained in the PMBOK® Guide.The PMP® requires 3-5 years’ experience MANAGING projects, not just participating as a team member, in addition to attending a 35 hour training course prior to taking the exam. The CAPM® does not require project management experience, but requires 23 hours of training to ensure understanding of standard project management terminology and best practices.Here are the differences between the PMP® and CAPM® certifications: That PMP® designation is for experienced project managers, but how should a person start their journey towards obtaining it? I tell them that the CAPM®, Certified Associate Project Manager, is perfect for them since it does not require project management experience and they only have to attend a course to apply and take the CAPM® exam.
